Nowhere is practical application of lasers being more thoroughly tested than in aeronautical communication.
A project dubbed OPALS (Optical Payload for Lasercomm Science) has been in the works for the better part of this year and has proven that Earth to Space communications using laser signals are infinitely more efficient than using radio signals.
The transmissions from a Table Mountain Observatory in Wrightwood, California to the OPALS station were both practical and repeatable according to Matthew Abrahamson, OPALS’ mission manager.
In addition to successful proof that the new communication technology is useful and functional, the mission has also collected an incredible amount of data that will improve the prototype.
The implications of data collected support space to earth communications, but also have important positive implications for relaying high-speed data from remote locations on the surface.
This would benefit researchers, engineers, and consumers in underdeveloped or very isolated worksites.
The next phase of OPALS’ mission will focus on how adaptive optics may positively advance an optical communications link.
